Jurassic World Rebirth (PG-13) ★★★½

They’re back! Yes, those terrifying dinosaurs were first imagined in Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel and later brought to life in director Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster hit “Jurassic Park” (1993). “Jurassic World: Rebirth” is the seventh film in the franchise, following two trilogies. It stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, a mercenary-for-hire on a perilous mission to collect dinosaur DNA from mutated creatures. The story takes place in 2027 on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located near Costa Rica, where a team of genetic scientists who created the dinosaurs.

The film has a runtime of two hours and 14 minutes, and I thoroughly enjoyed the script. In particular, I appreciated Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of a strong female character. She demonstrates intelligence, problem-solving skills, physical strength, compassion, and the ability to think outside the box. I admired her role as the lead in the film; she possesses a no-nonsense persona that serves as an outstanding role model for everyone to emulate in life.

Rupert Friend plays Martin Krebs, a Big Pharma executive who believes Dino DNA could hold the key to curing diseases modern medicine had previously deemed incurable. He’s motivated by profit, as he intends to sell the cure to a select group for personal gain. To obtain the necessary DNA samples, he recruits a team, including mercenary Zora Bennett, paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, and others, to undertake a perilous expedition to an island inhabited by living dinosaurs.

Zora’s most trusted team member is paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, as he’s almost unrecognizable in his nerdy wire-rimmed glasses, mustache with beard, and short hair, uncommonly he also can be heard playing the clarinet solo for his character’s theme in the film’s score that he recorded the solo at Abbey Road Studios with a 105-piece orchestra. Bailey’s also appearing in “Wicked Part 2” this November.

Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team member, played by the incomparable Mahershala Ali, plays the character Duncan Kincaid, who is described as Zora’s enigmatic ally with a past full of secrets. He’s pure joy to watch on screen, having won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Juan in the outstanding movie “Moonlight” (2016) about a young African-American man’s struggles with his identity.

“Jurassic World: Rebirth” effectively captures the essence and wonder, of the first film “Jurassic Park” (1993) thanks to ground-breaking visual effects, particularly during the Brontosaurus scene, where gorgeous close-ups are breathtaking, slowly building until we see the entire herd, which is far too numerous to count on-screen. I also enjoyed the underwater Dino’s as the ocean sequences were thrilling as well, with the addition of a father and his daughters caught far out to sea fighting for their lives against the Dino’s.    The large cast of characters allowed for diversity and inclusion, which I’m also a huge fan of. Filmmaker Gareth Edwards and screenplay writer David Koepp added original and interesting characters to the movie, which enhanced the film. There’s so much to champion here, I can highly recommend seeing it in 3D in the theater, as it will be remembered as a 2025 Summer blockbuster.

For parents considering whether to take their children, I recommend it for ages twelve and up. I sat next to an eight-year-old who closed her eyes for most of the movie. Yes, it can be frightening, just like the first installment.
