My Penguin Friend (PG) ★★★½

The film ‘My Penguin Friend’ is a poignant portrayal of the extraordinary bond between a solitary father and a penguin, set against the backdrop of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The narrative unfolds as the penguin, named Din-dim, embarks on an annual migration from Brazil to Argentina, a journey fraught with peril. Renowned French actor Jean Reno, known for his role in Steve Martin’s ‘Pink Panther movies, brings Joao, the compassionate fisherman who rescues Din-dim from the brink of death following an oil spill, to life. Directed by David Schurmann and penned by Paulina Lagudi Ulrich and Kristen Lazarian, this heartwarming film is now enchanting audiences in theaters.

It is a glorious tale of friendship that restores a spirit and heals a family with an unshakable, ocean-crossing loyalty, turning a tragedy into a triumph. This family-friendly film may not be suitable for young children as it opens with a scene where a child drowns. We view João as he starts to feel joy after years of sadness due to his new penguin friend. What’s impressive is that the penguin had a routine of suddenly disappearing back into the massive wilds of the ocean to return to the coast of Brazil to live with João.

You’ll also witness the penguin’s near misadventures and his unwavering determination to use his unique GPS-like powers, a natural instinct that allows him to navigate long distances, to find his way back to the place he now considers home with Joao. The beauty of nature is shown in this heartwarming story of love and determination. I can highly recommend it, as it has a relaxed tone and a beautiful quite nature. Adriana Barraza is cast as João’s wife nurturing Maria.
