Do you remember the 1982 TV show ‘Family Ties’ with Michael J Fox or the classic movie “Back to the Future?” “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” is a documentary about his very successful career, and the daily challenges he now faces. Michael talks about his battle with Parkinson’s disease, which started at age 29. I screened the film during the Sundance film festival in January and spoke with cast members. An excellent biography with themes of love, persistence, addiction, optimism and hope are all portrayed, a true testament to overcoming adversity.
Conversing with director Davis Guggenheim reaped benefits in my reporting as these situations can lead to deeper conversations regarding the film. In this case, Guggenheim, (Academy Award winning director for Best Documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth” (2007), shared his personal thoughts on working with Fox; he told me, “Michael has changed my life, his determination and tenacity are a role model for all.”
I highly recommend this film, four stars out of four as the director Davis Guggenheim also told me he enjoyed working on the film as Michael taught him so much about life and what is truly important. Of the 30 films I screened at Sundance Film Festival, this was my number one choice.
Michael’s wife Tracy Pollan, whom he met on “Family Ties,” also stars in offering her support and comments on their lives.
