“The Idea of You” (R) ★★★★ Amazon Prime Video

The fantastic romantic-comedy movie “The Idea of You” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, since its release on May 2, 2024. Based on the book of the same name by Robin Lee, the film follows the story of Solène, a 39-year-old single mom, who embarks on an unexpected romance with a 24-year-old heartthrob singer named Hayes Campbell, played by Nicholas Galitzine. He’s the lead singer of the popular boy band’ August Moon.’ Their whirlwind romance poses challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for. The film not only answers this question but also provides an enjoyable ride along the way.

One can easily imagine themselves in her situation or vice versa for guys. The relatable theme is exciting and fun to watch. Newcomer Nicholas Galitzine, a singer in real life, holds his own in the movie, although the Academy Award-winning Hathaway steals the show. Her facial gestures and quick wit are front and center. I enjoyed this romantic rom-com, especially with the ‘lead singer’s boy band theme.’ One can’t help but ask themselves, “What would you do?”

Hathaway’s best friend girlfriend, Tracy, played comically by Annie Mumolo, is always a breath of fresh air. She’s played this role in other films with Kristin Wiig, it’s always a joy to see her in anything as the co-writer of “Bridesmaids” (2011) is fabulous in this token role.

It’s a delight to watch them in romantic cities like Paris and Rome, which adds to the film’s appeal. Michael Showalter’s prior films, ‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ and ‘Josie and Pussycats’ were treated as self-aware satire. Going into a pop-star’s inner circle can be a fun ride, although I’m not sure that too many people may find that life enchanting also have photographers stalking or the run-ins with major fans. My favorite part was watching him dedicate a song to her, while all are glaring and wishing the tables were turned. I’d say check it out on Amazon Prime Video.
