The Broken Hearts Gallery highlights yet another New York rom-com, although thankfully with a few new twists. Lucy Geraldine Viswanathan) having a bad day and an even worse night—after being dumped from her boyfriend and fired from her gallery assistant job, she drunkenly climbs into the wrong car, thinking it’s her Uber ride. The very handsome Nick (Dacre Montgomery) is concerned about her woes and drives her home anyway. This meet-cute starts a genuine platonic friendship.
The duo meet routinely in Nick’s somewhat finished boutique hotel—he’s renovating a classic hotel into his vision of a hotel he’d like to stay in. Lucy, a self-proclaimed “emotional hoarder,” convinces him to let her curate an exhibition of donated all heartbreak memorabilia in the lobby.
Through girlfriend vignettes’ and Nick’s surprise visits, we begin to see a blossoming romance between the two. Viswanathan—known for her zany roles in “Blockers” and “Bad Education,” shines her. Montgomery, the steamy lifeguard in “Stranger Things,” finds himself in a bit of a more reserved role, although he handles it with great care.
Written and directed by Natalie Krinsky, her direction allows both leads to find their ground and play their hands. I enjoyed both performances and surprises along the way.
